RFU will need government bailout if England do not play until summer 2021

The Rugby Football Union’s chief executive, Bill Sweeney, has warned it would be a “catastrophe” if the Six Nations is hit next year by coronavirus, admitting the organisation would need a government bailout if England do not play again until next summer.

Sweeney revealed the union is facing losses of at least £100m if England’s autumn internationals are played behind closed doors – the figure rises to £122m if they are cancelled. Speaking to the digital, culture, media and sport committee, he conceded that the Six Nations next year is similarly affected “we would have to come to the government for support”.
