A 53-year-old driver has admitted causing death by careless driving after a cyclist was killed following a collision in Solihull.
David McSkimming was driving a Porsche Boxster when he struck Anthony Satterthwaite as he cycled in the opposite direction on Eastcote Lane, at 11.50am on Saturday 22 December 2018.
Mr Satterthwaite sadly suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.
The collision happened on a bend when McSkimming lost control of the car and it span onto the wrong side of the damp road.
It hit a tree before rebounding across the carriageway and colliding with 51-year-old Mr Satterthwaite.
Forensic investigators concluded that the car was travelling at 59mph in the 40mph zone on the approach to the bend.
Birmingham Crown Court today jailed McSkimming to six months jail suspended for two years and ordered he carry out 250 hours community service.
McSkimming, of Gainsborough Crescent, Knowle, was also banned from driving for two years.
In a victim impact statement read to the court, Mr Satterthwaite’s wife said: “Most people will remember Anthony for his huge smile, his laugh and his friendly demeanour.
“Anthony was an incredibly strong cyclist who was passionate about the sport and would cycle hundreds of miles a week to keep fit and also enjoy the great outdoors as well as the social aspect of cycling.”
Det Sgt Paul Hughes, of the Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “This was a tragic collision which resulted in the death of a much-loved husband and father.
“Our thoughts remain with Anthony’s devastated family at this difficult time.”
